  So, the dice courts judgement is here. It was lol to read and hear, crazy verdict.

  But as in all good movies, the heroes lose in the beginning but have an epic victory in the end anyhow. That’s the only thing hollywood ever taught us.

  - The words of a man jailed for running a website.

  Just the other week during and after the London G20 riots I was standing up for the government and Police.

  Today my opinion changed. This is down to the harsh reality that men have been jailed for running a website.

  Regardless of the law and ethics, it is absolutely ridiculous and shameful that these guys can be sent to prison for this.

  It goes against everything I have grown to stand for. Not illegal filesharing, not law-breaking, but the internet.

  Sure you can jail some guys. But you can’t break the spirit of the internet. You can’t break the spirit of the people who use the internet every-single-day to update their blogs, Twitters and make the world a better, nicer place.

  I would say that the internet is all about respect. And the people who jailed The Pirate Bay founders have none of it.

  Yah. Hello world indeed.

  I’ve recently switched my blog from mskempster.com to this place to make room for a more creative environment on my own domain.

  I will try to post at least once a month just to keep my archives consistent.

  Seriously though I really want to write some interesting stuff here.

  I have been blogging here for 7 months now. Not much compared to other blogs but I am pleased that I’ve managed to keep a blog going for so long without starting again.

  Here are the numberics for my blog’s goings on since October.

  - 69 blog posts
  - 386 individual tags
  - 31 legit comments from real people
  - 43 manually marked spam comments (Akismet disabled currently)

  It’s hard to get my head around 69 blog posts, it’s not a lot in the grand-scheme of things but it is to me.

  Image-replacement is nothing new. It must have been a couple of years ago that I discovered Mike Davidson’s sIFR – A mixture of flash and scripting that would allow you to replace headings for elements such as post titles with flash based replacement fonts.

  Fonts on the web are very limited, on most websites you will find either Helvetica/Arial, Lucida, Verdana or Georgia. The reason that we need to stick to these fonts is due to the fact that these are the only suitable fonts that you can guarantee will be on the client-side when viewing a website.

  If a website was to use say ‘Avenir’ for titles, and my computer didn’t have this particular typeface, I would be subjected to un-intentional typography.

  sIFR has never been that easy to setup, especially for use in something like WordPress. I had been aware of plugins for WordPress which would replace text with image/flash based alternatives but had never tried one.

  Today I came across the Facelift plugin for WordPress and was immediately amazed by how fast it was up and running. All I had to do was install the plugin (straight from the Dashboard) and that was it. There is a FLIR option in the Appearance section of the Dashboard for changing settings such as the font to use. You can even upload your own fonts if you don’t like the defaults (keeping copyright restrictions in mind).

  So I am now very happy experimenting with different fonts to see what looks best with my current theme and am looking forward to seeing how I can use it for other projects in the future.

  Jonathan Snook has just updated Colour Contrast Check tool which allows web designers to compare a foreground (text) and background colour to see if they are Compliant, and a host of other things.

  Generally speaking, people can see if colours do not clash (because you wouldn’t put red text on a green background, right?) But if you want to check colours to see if they meet standards or just want statisticals about the colours you are using then this is a great tool to play with.

  This photo pretty much sums up the whole affair and my feelings for it. All I can say is that I am sickened by these people who have no respect for their country.

  Everyone has a right to protest. Just not to break in and trash the RBS offices. They do not have the right to abuse our policemen. They do not have the right to bring hate to the streets of London.

  

  All I can say is that this sucks big-time. I really appreciate the UK Police, true heroes who have to put up with attacks and abuse from people like these.

  A lot of the protesters were there for a reason. And I support them. I do not support the individuals who chose to riot the streets of London carelessly smashing windows and graffiting walls. These people are terrorists and I hope justice is done.

  On Saturday evening, we were encouraged to turn off our lights between 20.30 and 21.30 as a sort of protest/mild attempt to save the earth. Although I considered it and even promoted it on Twitter/Facebook, I can not say that I turned my lights off.

  There were reasons for this however. My primary excuse for this was that I had to work at 9am the following morning. I wanted to enjoy a chilled out few hours the evening before watching TV, with the lights on. Props to my work though, as it would seem the restaurants did turn their lights off for this event, and had a massive poster in the window to prove it.

  It was only a few minutes ago that it occured. Our lights are off all day and whilst we are sleeping anyway. So, why turn off the lights for 1 hour until half-past Nine, when just a couple of hours later everyone’s lights would be off anyway, for about 10 hours?

  My lights have been off all day today whilst I have been out of college. They are still off now because it is not dark. I fail to see the significance of Earth Hour now and am surprised it was not criticised at the time.

  For a while I have been wanting to clear up my Categories for this blog. This has not yet happened and still needs to!

  At the speed of the web, I have decided to replace the linear category ‘list’ with a massive tag cloud. Now don’t be fooled, this is no-ordinary Tag cloud. It does not use the normal WordPress tag cloud widget. Instead, it lists every single tag for this website.

  Since relaunching a few months ago I have done a fairly good job of keeping tags neat and tidy. I was influenced by the way Jason Kottke simply writes straight-forward lowercase single-word tags. What I mean by this is that if I want to tag something about Barack Obama I would simply write ‘barackobama’. This way, I do not need to worry about keeping my tags in a consistent case or format. With these simple tags, nothing gets duplicated. It’s just obvious what I need to tag a post.

  In a nut-shell – the block of tags on the right sums up this whole site and some of my interests. Enjoy using it.
